Siraha's Local Leaders Empowered to Tackle Climate Change and Disasters After Landmark Helping Heart Nepal Training

In a significant step towards building a climate-resilient Madhesh Province, Helping Heart Nepal has successfully concluded an intensive two-day training program on “Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction & Management (DRRM)”, brought together 30 influential local leaders, equipping them with the practical skills and strategic knowledge needed to protect their communities from escalating climate risks.

The curriculum was meticulously designed to bridge the gap between policy and practice. Grounded in national and global frameworks like Nepal’s Disaster Risk Management Strategy and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the sessions were highly interactive. Participants moved beyond theory, engaging in hands-on simulations, risk mapping exercises, and collaborative group work. One of the participating Deputy Mayors stated, “Before this training, we often felt we were only reacting to disasters. Now, we have the tools and a clear roadmap to prepare, adapt, and lead our communities proactively. The CoLA plans we developed are a game-changer for our municipalities.

The participants represented a powerful cross-section of local governance and civil society, including 2 Deputy Mayors, 7 Ward Chairpersons, 3 Ward Members, 4 social activists, 1 School Principal, 1 Vice-Principal, 6 teachers, and 6 community/organizational representatives. This high-level participation underscores a strong, unified commitment to safeguarding communities. The training, part of the Emergency Relief and Awarness Program, directly addressed the region's vulnerabilities to floods, landslides, and droughts exacerbated by climate change.

This initiative's impact extends beyond individual plans. By empowering this cohort of leaders, Helping Heart Nepal has catalyzed a district-wide shift in emergency preparedness. Each participating municipality is now positioned to establish its own dedicated Emergency and Initial Rapid Assessment (IRA) teams, creating a robust, localized network of first responders and planners.

Helping Heart Nepal is proud to have facilitated this crucial capacity-building event, reinforcing its commitment to fostering self-sufficient, resilient communities across Nepal. The engagement and dedication shown by Siraha's leaders signal a new era of proactive and inclusive disaster management for the region.
