From Despair to Hope: HHRD Nepal Restores Lives Amid Devastating Floods in 2025

Thousands of people across the Terai region of Nepal have been affected by severe flooding due to heavy rains causing families to abandon their homes in hopes of seeking higher ground. Already being labeled as ‘the worst flooding in a life time by several relief agencies, the danger of another down pour threatens the region. Nepal is prone to floods, landslides, and occasional earthquakes & droughts. The mentioned types of disasters affect approximately 10,000 families almost every year. Among the major disasters faced by Nepal, floods are the most recurrent, claiming an average of 200 lives annually in the past five years. Between mid-April and October 2025, Nepal recorded 4,065 disaster-related events, resulting in 285 deaths, 1,072 injuries, 27 missing persons, and 7,211 families affected. The risk of floods and landslides has increased in Sunsari with the incessant rain. As many as 1,036 houses were waterlogged in Sunsari due to flooding, the District Police Office informed. Siraha, Mahottari, and other districts were issued a “red alert” by the Flood Forecasting Division on 4 October 2025 due to high flood and landslide risks.

In response, Helping Heart for Relief and Development Nepal (HHRD Nepal) launched rapid relief operations, delivering essential food, clean drinking water, and hygiene materials to flood-affected families. Now in the first phase, we reached the Sunsari and Siraha districts, where the distribution programs were conducted in close coordination with local authorities and in the presence of the local government representative, demonstrating strong collaboration between civil society and local government.

“The swift response by Helping Heart Nepal ensured that critical supplies reached those in desperate need,” stated Lakshmi Kumari Shrestha Yadav, Deputy Mayor, Karjanha Municipality, Siraha, during the distribution ceremony.

As of now, recovery efforts continue with ongoing assessments of damaged homes and livelihoods. Relief agencies remain active to restore essential services and support displaced communities, while local governments coordinate long-term rehabilitation and preparedness plans.
